Dr. Mohanish Deshmukh's laboratory has collaborated with the Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Core Facility on a project focused on understanding the molecular mechanism of the rapid cell death of hES cells after DNA damage. This research shows that undifferentiated hES cells maintain the pro-apoptotic protein Bax in its active state at the Golgi and not at the mitochondria, thus priming the cells for a rapid cell death upon DNA damage. The paper has been published in Molecular Cell and was highlighted by the News Room-UNC Health Care as well as by The Scientist and Yahoo!News.
