UNC is hosting a Colorectal Cancer Awareness today, Marych 6 2015, to support a campaign to get screened for colorectal cancer. Dr. Olafur Palsson and Stefanie Twist went to the “Strollin’ Colon” exhibit and spoke with Jenny Hanspal, RN, who is a nurse navigator for the NC Cancer Hospital Cancer Support Program. For more information on Colorectal Cancer Screening and this event, please visit the website here.

For individuals who do not have health insurance or are worried about the costs of getting a colonoscopy, the Colon Cancer Alliance has a one time award to help offset some of the associated costs. The Blue Hope Prevention Award is offers financial support to qualified individuals with financial support including screening related expenses such as transportation to the hospital/clinic, child care, lost wages, etc. If you would like more information, please contact the Toll-Free helpline at 877-422-2030.

To qualify for the Blue Hope Prevention Award, you must be at least 50 years old, no health insurance, no prior colonoscopy, and no history of colon cancer.

Another awareness tool available at the “Strollin’ Colon” is The Buddy Bracelet. When you get your colonoscopy, wear the bracelet with you during the procedure. When you are done, pass it along to someone else to urge them to get a colonoscopy to get screened for colorectal cancer! For more information, please visit www.preventcancer.org or call 1-877-35-colon.
