On May 1, 2013 Dr. Olafur Palsson, PsyD was promoted to Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill.

On May 1, 2013 Dr. Olafur Palsson, PsyD was promoted to Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Dr. Palsson has been with the Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders since 2000.  He is widely recognized for his development of a fully scripted hypnosis treatment which has proven effective for treating IBS in patients who do not benefit from usual medical care, and which is now used by hundreds of clinicians across the U.S. and in several other countries. Dr. Palsson is a member of the Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire Development Committee and has worked with scientists at NASA’s Langley Research Center to invent and develop novel biofeedback technologies that can be used to facilitate therapeutic mind-body effects for treatment of healthy problems and optimizing of mental and physical performance which has resulted in 2 U.S. patents and several patents pending.  In 2005, Dr. Palsson also received the nomination and runner – up prize for the NASA Commercial Invention of the Year Award that was shared with Alan T. Pope and Randall L. Harris.  Dr. Palsson has authored over 200 published articles, abstracts, and book chapters and has presented at over 50 different meetings, symposia, and educational events.

 

Dr. Palsson completed his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology and fellowship in behavioral medicine from the Department of Medicine at UNC – Chapel Hill.  Dr. Palsson’s research encompasses the effects of hypnosis, biofeedback, and psychological factors that affect the mind-body connection.  He has also been featured on Oprah’s magazine for his work in hypnosis. Dr. Palsson has also been featured in publications such as Newsweek, Prevention Magazine, and American Health Magazine.
