Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma is set of complementary methodologies to improve how we lead, teach and care for patients at UNC. While Lean focuses on speed, eliminating waste, standardization, and flexibility/responsiveness, Six Sigma seeks to verify root causes of current performance and eliminate variation. Both seek to improve the quality of care we deliver to our patients.

UNC Medical Center's goal is to train all staff and faculty as Yellow Belts – those who can assist with improvement projects.

Yellow Belts with interest and aptitude can pursue training to become Purple Belts (who focus on Lean projects), Green Belts (who focus on Six Sigma projects) and Blue Belts (leaders who sponsor improvement projects). Training is provided by Black Belts in UNC Medical Center's Department of Operational Efficiency.
