Unit-based Coaching

The goal of this program is to develop unit-based TeamSTEPPS coaches with the skills and confidence to mentor their peers in best teamwork behavior.  This page contains information, examples, and tools to guide you in developing your own coaching skills.  Please contact Celeste Mayer, Patient Safety Officer, with feedback or questions.

Leadership

“I’d like to take a moment before we start to talk about what is going to happen and our contingency plans if the unexpected happens.” (use briefings before events to articulate clear goals)

  • “If anyone sees something that concerns you during this procedure I want you to speak up.” (empower others)
  • “Helping out like you did helps the team and the patient. Good job!” (promote teamwork)
  • “Let’s focus on the care of this patient now and we’ll discuss your disagreement later.” (conflict resolution)

Situation Monitoring

  • Scan and assess what’s going on around you during a team event (situation monitoring)
  • Knowing what’s going on around you (situation awareness)
  • When all involved are actively scanning the situation (Shared Mental Model) the team can rapidly anticipate needs and adapt to the unexpected.

Mutual Support

  • “I think the dose was changed to 30 mg/hr…” “I have it here, we changed the dose to 25mg/hr after checking weight.” (verbal mutual support)
  • “ I can draw the needed blood sample but I don’t have the right tube.” “Here it is.” (Physical task assistance)
  • Protects team members from work overload situations that may reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of error

Communication

  • “I’m concerned about X, I’m uncomfortable with X because…, and I think X could be a safety problem.” (CUSsing with critical language)
  • “The O2 sats have dropped to 75%!” (call out)
  • Please get 25 mg of benadryl.” “OK, I’ll get 25 mg of benadryl.” (check back)
