CAR Experience

Continuity Ambulatory Rotation (CAR): One month required rotation for categorical interns in the department of medicine. Usually two interns are rotating each month.

 

Immersive experience in Ambulatory Practice

  • Evaluate and treat patients in faculty clinic with acute complaints, preventive care and chronic disease management

 

Familiarity with Disease Management Programs

  • Observe providers in disease management programs such as diabetes, anticoagulation, and chronic pain

 

Completion of a QI project related to ambulatory practice

  • Complete Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School QI Curriculum; an online based curriculum focused on basic theory of quality improvement. www.ihi.org
  • Design and complete a quality improvement project in ambulatory setting under supervision of faculty member.
  • Complete data collection and analysis, and present the results to clinical faculty and fellow residents

 

Pre-operative Evaluation

  • Perform a comprehensive pre-operative assessment under supervision of faculty member and provide consultant with recommendations to minimize morbidity and mortality in the peri-operative period

 

Travel Medicine Evaluation

  • Perform a travel consultation providing tailored recommendations on immunizations and prophylaxis based on travel location

 

Transitions and Hospital Follow up

  • Evaluate complex patients recently discharged from the hospital with a focus on medication reconciliation, home health needs,  and addressing ongoing clinical needs

 

Presentation of Scholarly Work

  • Select and critically appraise a journal article related to ambulatory practice and present to faculty and residents

 

Experience with Dermatology

  • Observe common dermatological conditions and treatment in the sub-specialty ambulatory setting
