The General Internal Medicine clinic has committed to having all staff members participate in Quality Improvement Teams as a way to improve patient outcomes and clinic efficiency. These cross functional teams meet twice-a-month to identify, work on, and resolve issues that are of concern to our patients and staff. Using the Model for Improvement we identify an issue, collect data, and test the improvement. This process may go though a number of cycles. Once an agreed upon improvement is found, the new process is documented, staff are trained, and the improvement is spread throughout the clinic.
IMC QI Team 1 has been focused on improving communications both with patients and among clinic staff. They have tested and used teach back methods to facilitate improvements. Team 1 meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 8 - 8:45 am in the Trailer 47 conference area.
IMC QI Team 2 has focused on improving the process for handling (primarily faxed) resident prescription refills as well as the many forms that must be signed both residents and attendings in order to improve turnaround times. Team 2 meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 8 - 8:45 am in the 3rd floor ACC conference room.
IMC QI Team 3 has worked on a number of issues including a WebCIS messaging protocol to improve response times, a refill request medication list that requires an appointment before refill, an unavailable resident protocol, and a process and new cover sheets for handling faxes that were sent here in error or need more information. Team 3 meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 8 - 8:45 am in the 1st floor ACC conference room.
IMC QI Team 4 has been focused on improving patient flow throughout the clinic. Team 4 meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 8 - 8:45 am in the 1st floor ACC conference room.
