Research Summary
STI and HIV prevention and research in Africa and the Caribbean 3. Behets currently works in Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Jamaica. She has conducted epidemiologic surveys and operational research on STIs and HIV, with a focus on high risk groups including sex workers. Her ongoing research includes a randomized clinical trial to evaluate azithromycin for the treatment of early syphilis, a randomized controlled trial to evaluate if offering men at high risk of acquiring STIs a choice of condoms increases condom use and decreases STI incidence. Behets is planning a RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of the diaphragm to decrease gonococcal and chlamydial infections. She is directing HIV prevention interventions including prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV.
