Research Summary
Suzanne Maman, MHS, PhD is a social scientist trained in public health with over fifteen years of research experience related to HIV/AIDS prevention in sub-Saharan Africa and the United States. Her primary areas of research inquiry include HIV prevention (especially in the area of HIV counseling and testing) and gender-based violence mitigation. Dr Maman's work focuses on two aspects of the association between HIV and violence: 1) violence as a barrier to women implementing HIV risk reduction strategies and; 2) violence as an outcome of women’s experience with HIV testing and HIV status disclosure to their sexual partners. She uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to develop and evaluate interventions that address the nexus between HIV and violence. She is conducting a randomized controlled trial in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to evaluate the efficacy of a combined microfinance and health promotion intervention for HIV prevention among networks of young men. In Durban, South Africa she evaluated an intervention for HIV-positive and HIV-negative pregnant women to support them through the HIV testing and disclosure process.
