Steve Meshnick’s work has been at the interface of epidemiology and laboratory sciences. He received his PhD from Rockefeller University and his MD from Cornell University Medical College. He is particularly interested in malaria, Pneumocystis jirovecii, and mother-to-child transmission of HIV. His lab has developed new methods, such as high-throughput real-time PCR, to study the epidemiology of malaria and drug-resistant malaria. His lab is also working on the mechanisms of action of antimalarial drugs.

He is currently applying new spatial epidemiological methods to understand malaria evolution and dispersion. Meshnick has worked on malaria in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other sites. Using specimens from human drug trials, he is studying the evolution of drug resistance and developing new tools to detect resistance in malaria and pneumocystis. He is also using blood and tissue samples from malaria and HIV infected pregnant women to understand the pathogenesis of malaria and HIV during pregnancy and the mechanisms of mother-to-child transmission.
