Ian McGowan, MD, PhD, FRCP, is a professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition with a joint appointment in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. McGowan is co-principal investigator of the University of Pittsburgh-based Microbicide Trials Network (MTN), an HIV/AIDS clinical trials network established in 2006 by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

A recognized authority on the development of microbicides, Dr. McGowan is principal investigator of three NIH-funded research programs, two of which are focused on the clinical development of rectal microbicides to prevent sexual transmission of HIV.

Before joining the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in September of 2007, Dr. McGowan was a professor of medicine and co-director of the Center for Prevention Research at the Dave Geffen School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles.
