A key collaborator with IDEEL@Carolina has been Dr. Taylor at Duke University. He has worked closely with all IDEEL members on a variety of studies and completed his ID fellowship training under Dr. Steven Meshnick. He has lead several important projects to come from the IDEEL lab, including leading much of the work associated with the Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium and other critical molecular epidemiology studies. IDEEL@Carolina investigators have a long standing collaboration with researchers at UMass working on studies of drug resistance, providing scientific and bioinformatic support for multiple projects. Drs. Juliano and Meshnick have joint NIH funding through a clinical study of artemisnin resistance in Africa (Juliano PI).

Penn State University

Drs. Juliano and Meshnick have a long collaboration with Dr. Read, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics (CIDD). The have collaborated on development of methods for the study of with-in human host dynamics of malaria infections after antimalarial therapy. Learn more about Dr. Read at the hyperlinks below:

National Institutes of Health- Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research

Dr. Juliano works as part of the collaboration lead by Dr. Wellems at the NIH to determine the mechanisms associated with chloroquine resistance in Plasmodium vivax. Dr. Juliano’s lab has been doing the genome sequencing of recombinant progeny from the genetic cross conducted at the NIH. Learn more about our NIH collaborators at the hyperlinks below:

Centers for Disease Control

Drs. Meshnick and Juliano have worked closely with researchers at the Center for Disease Control on molecular epidemiology studies of malaria in a variety of countries, primarily interested in understanding the genetic origins of drug resistance.

University of California-San Francisco

Dr. Juliano has collaborated with researchers at the University of California- San Francisco to study antimalarial resistance. They continue to collaborate with Dr. Bailey from the University of Massachusetts on genotyping methods for studying transmission networks of parasites in low transmission regions. Dr. Meshnick and Dr. Juliano run the genomics core for the Southern and Central Africal International Center for Excellence in Malaria Research (Bill Moss, PI). Dr. Bowman and Dr. Bob Gilman have been collaborating to study the epidemiology and pathogenesis of Chagas disease in Peru and Bolivia for more than ten years. University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Bowman has been working with Dr. Levy for more than ten years to study the epidemiology of Chagas disease at it emerges in urban areas. Dr. Levy is an expert in the population ecology of the vector of Chagas disease and is working with Dr. Bowman on studies of the insect’s microbiome.

Drs. Lin and Juliano are working with the University of Maryland to study the genetics of drug resistance in Cambodia. In collaboration with AFRIMS (see Asia section), IDEEL@Carolina and the University of Maryland have been working on understanding emerging resistance to piperaquine.

DHS-MEASURE

Dr. Meshnick has collaborated with DHS-MEASURE to study multiple infectious diseases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By leveraging the large representative surveys done every few years, Dr. meshnick has been working on mapping disease burden across the country leveraging blood spots collected during the surveys.

Dr. Juliano has collaborated with Dr. Mideo at the University of Toronto for many years. Their work has focused on studying the with-in host dynamics of malaria strains in polyclonal infections after antimalarial therapy. Dr. Mideo has lead the ecological aspects of these projects.
