UNC Project-Malawi, a biomedical research project based in Lilongwe, invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions:

1. Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:
A laboratory technician shall be responsible for performing tests in assigned areas of the laboratory. He/she shall demonstrate skills and knowledge of assigned areas and assists other laboratory technicians in the performance of their duties. She/he shall follow Good Clinical Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the UNC Project.

Major responsibilities will include:


  • Perform processing of laboratory samples according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements
  • Perform laboratory tests on scheduled benches as assigned by the Lab Director
  • Perform freezer sample storage and retrieval according to current protocols
  • Perform reagent preparation and equipment maintenance according to training and assignment
  • Maintain a high level of precision and accuracy for all work performed
  • Respond to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and efficient manner
  • Provide input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manual
  • Prepare lab samples for shipment as needed
  • Meet or exceed continuing education requirements for position


  • Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instrumentation, new methodology and training as needed
  • Assist with training and problem-solving as needed


  • Follow all laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment


  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude in relationships with co-workers and other personnel
  • Meet or exceed quality assurance levels of the laboratory and collaboration
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations
  • Serve as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counselors and visitors in a courteous and empathetic manner
  • Follow laboratory and collaboration policies
  • Use all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost-effective manner
  • Assist or carry out other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director

Qualification and Experience

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Registered with Medical Council of Malawi
  • From none to four years' experience

2. Receptionist

Job Summary:
The receptionist in the UNC Project is responsible for operating the PABX Switchboard. She/he is responsible for welcoming visitors to the general office and directing them to appropriate offices. She/he is also responsible for arranging conference calls for all studies and management. The receptionist is also responsible for the calm and smooth running of the general office by ensuring that a conducive working environment is maintained. She/he can also be assigned to distribute and control mail in addition to assisting in filing.

Specific job descriptions include the following:

  • Operate PABX Machine, answering, screening and directing telephone calls or messages promptly and professionally to appropriate offices or officers
  • Receive and direct office visitors to appropriate offices
  • Keep phone numbers and addresses for all staff and other companies and organizations the Project frequently calls
  • Assist in providing administrative and logistical support services for the general office including typing or drafting reports, letters, schedules and other documents for internal or external correspondence, confidential or otherwise
  • Assist in maintaining effective filing system in the general office
  • Assist in taking minutes during meetings, organizing and distributing them with minimal delay
  • Assist in receiving, opening and recording incoming mail and routing them out to appropriate offices and officers
  • Assist in logistics whenever workshops and seminars are conducted
  • Assist in tracking bills for office utilities, especially phone bills
  • Perform any other duties assigned from time to time

Qualifications and Experience

  • Malawi Certification of Education Plus
  • Diploma in Administrative Studies or any relevant qualification
  • Two years' experience doing a similar job

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with astute listening abilities
  • Multitasking skills in handling several tasks simultaneously, including juggling multiple phone lines; face-to-face contact with visitors and employees; and clerical duties
  • Prioritizing skills in tackling dozens of duties at once with many requests
  • Organization skills to find files and phone numbers at a moment's notice and maintain a tidy work area
  • Technical skills in Word and Excel processes
  • Interpersonal skills as the eyes and ears of the Project. Be able to maintain good relationships with employees at all levels of the Project
  • Problem-solving abilities for the general office
  • Dependability skill due to interfacing with nearly every client and employee - whether face-to-face or on the phone, high dependability is a must-have skill
