Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program (FICRS/F)

The NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program (FICRS/F) offers one year of mentored clinical research in a developing country. The program is open to current medical students (scholars) and students enrolled in either post-residency clinical fellowships or in other health-related post-doctoral programs (fellows), regardless of citizenship. Since international applicants may not have U.S.-style fellowships or post-doctoral programs, they may apply if they are within three years of completing their training.

This program is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health and managed by the support center at Vanderbilt University, with fiscal support from the Office of AIDS Research, National Cancer Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and National Eye Institute.

Applicants for the fellowship must develop a collaborative research proposal with an eligible institution overseas. UNC operates a sponsored site at UNC Project-Malawi.

Research Opportunities

Trainees will be able to do clinical research in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention in adults and children, STI treatment and prevention, treatment of opportunistic infections including cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis, treatment of malignancies, treatment and prevention of trauma/injury and burns, and malaria vaccines.

Language Requirement

Scholars and felllows are expected to be proficient in English.  Although most patients only speak Chichewa, all of the health professionals (nurses, laboratory researchers and clinicians) speak English, including all of the government staff. The Peace Corps training program provides tutors to students for weekly Chichewa classes. Translators are readily available when needed.
