Research is the backbone of the Center for Infectious Diseases. The center has $12 million in annual grant funding from government agencies and private foundations. The center houses multiple R01 projects and two NIH-funded international training grants for predoctoral and postdoctoral students.

CFID research is focused on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, malaria and tuberculosis, biodefence and hospital infection control. UNC ranks in the top 10 among the nation's HIV/AIDS programs.
