The objectives of the Science of Medicine Selective are summarized below. The objectives are based on a combination of core competencies and milestones identified by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine as goals for medical students in the 4th year and internally defined objectives for this course. As the course is organized into two components (explained in detail below) the objectives for the course are presented in a format to identify specific goals for each of these components.
The ultimate goal of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to delve more deeply into their chosen clinical area, emphasizing the links between basic science research, clinical research, and clinical care. It aims to provide graduating medical students a foundation for evidence-based practice of clinical medicine.
