Criteria for Establishment of New Named Awards

Any member of the Society may make nominations of distinguished scientists (members or founders of the ISTH) who have made exceptional contributions to the fields of thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology to be honored with a named Plenary or State of the Art Lecture by submission of a nomination letter to the ISTH Lectureship and Awards Committee.

Plenary Lectures: Major endowments for a total of 5 named plenary lectureships may be created to honor the founders of the ISTH or individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field of thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology according to these criteria.

  1. Contributions comprising an endowment of $100,000 or more are required to establish a named Plenary Lecture Award. These funds will support expenses related to the award and lectureship, including but not limited to $2,000 for travel and up to $5,000 as honorarium.
  2. Currently existing awards belonging to this group are the Sol Sherry Lecture; the Wright-Schulte Lecture; the Marion Barnhart Memorial Lecture, a lectureship sponsored by the Collen Foundation (to be named).
  3. Plenary Lecture Awards will be used to support one lecture in each of five plenary sessions during the program of an ISTH Congress at the discretion of the President and Organizing Committee.
  4. Selection of recipients for the named Plenary Lecture Awards will be the responsibility of the Congress President and Organizing Committee.
  5. Establishment of named Plenary Lecture Awards shall be the sole responsibility of ISTH Council.

State of the Art Lecture Awards. A limited number of named State of the Art Lecture Awards will be established to support SOA lectures at ISTH congresses according to these criteria:

  1. Contributions comprising an endowment of $50,000 or more and periodic contributions to maintain a balance of $50,000 or more may be used to support expenses related to SOA Lectures, at the discretion of the Congress President and Organizing Committee.
  2. Currently existing awards belonging to this group include the Shirley Johnson Lecture Award and the Pia Glas Greenwalt Lecture Award. The Council may periodically consider merging or substituting these awards with named lectureships honoring more recent individuals or changing the category or frequency of a named lectureship.
  3. Selection of recipients for the named SOA Lecture Awards will be the responsibility of the Congress President and Organizing Committee.
  4. Establishment of named SOA Lecture Awards shall be the sole responsibility of ISTH Council.
  5. Industrial sponsorship in the form of contributions to the endowments supporting the SOA Lecture Awards is encouraged, consistent with the Society's conflict of interest policy that any lecture supported by industry be funded as an "unrestricted educational grant" and precluding any industry involvement in identification of individuals for whom SOA Lecture Awards are named or in the selection of award recipients.

Process for Proposal of New Named Awards

  1. Nominations of distinguished scientists (members or founders of ISTH) who have made exceptional contributions to the field of thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology to be honored with a named Plenary or State of the Art Lecture should be made by a letter to the ISTH Lectureship and Awards Committee from any member of the ISTH.
  2. Nominating letters should:
    1. Include a CV, if available, and document the contributions in sufficient detail to support the nomination.
    2. Document in detail the nature and amount of financial contribution comprising an endowment in accordance with the criteria designated for named Plenary or State of the Art Lectureships.
  3. Nominations will be considered on an annual basis by the ISTH Council.
  4. Establishment of a named Plenary or State of the Art Lectureship is the sole responsibility of the ISTH Council.
