SANOFI-AVENTIS/ISTH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AWARDS
Description and Requirements
In 2007, Sanofi-Aventis will grant one basic research and one clinical research postdoctoral award to support studies in the field of thrombosis, specifically on the subject of
“Pediatric or Preganancy-Related Thrombosis.”
The award is intended to support a highly qualified scientist (“Fellow”) who is sincerely interested in pursuing a career in thrombosis research. The grant for the first year of the Fellowship Award is contingent upon approval and acceptance by a committee working under the auspices of the ISTH and the XXI st Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (“Congress”). The grant for the second year of the Fellowship Award is contingent upon ISTH review and acceptance of the Fellow’s timely submission of his/her first-year progress report to the chair of the Fellowship Committee. There is no provision for further support beyond two years. The salary stipend of US $20,000 will be made by ISTH directly to the Fellow’s sponsoring institution.
Medical or science graduates who hold a doctoral degree (e.g., MD, PhD, Pharm D, DSc, DO, DDS, DVM) at the time the Fellowship Award is made (July 1, 2007) are eligible. Individuals who will be enrolled in a degree program during the tenure of the proposed Fellowship Award are ineligible, and no individual may apply if six years have elapsed after receiving his or her degree by July 1, 2007 . The Fellow is required to spend full-time effort on research or in activities directly related to the research focus. The Fellow must be affiliated with an established investigator in the field (“Sponsor”), who must sign the application form to indicate willingness to provide the facilities and guidance for the research.
Local ethical committee approval is required and must be submitted with this application for research that includes clinical trials and/or involves human subjects or research with animals. Both Sanofi-Aventis and ISTH expect all work to be undertaken in accordance with the highest research standards and to conform to good clinical practice guidelines (ICH, GCP guidelines, May 1, 1996) and in agreement with the Declaration of Helsinki (Hong-Kong amendment, September, 1989). Any suitable university department or similar institution may function as the host institution, but changes in a Fellow’s research project supervisor requires notification to the ISTH. In the event that the Fellow leaves the institution, he or she must notify the ISTH immediately. Transfer of the project is subject to approval by the ISTH.
All financial support is contingent upon approval of the proposed budget request submitted with the application. If the total salary stipend is not exhausted during the first year, residual money may be applied to the second year of the Fellowship Award. The Fellow shall be responsible for paying all required taxes and insurance relative to the stipend award. No financial assistance is provided for transferring or household moving. The Fellowship Award does not constitute an employer-employee relationship between Sanofi-Aventis and the Fellow or between ISTH and the Fellow. The Fellow is not permitted to simultaneously hold a comparable award as a source of stipend supplementation, nor may the Fellow engage in private practice for personal remuneration during the term of the Fellowship Award.

The deadline for receipt of applications is April 1, 2007 . Applications received after the closing date will not be accepted.
Applications must be supported by the following documents:
As a condition of Sanofi-Aventis providing the grant for the Fellowship Award, both the Fellow and the sponsoring institution agree that Sanofi-Aventis will be provided the right to review the research, at the time the two-year Fellowship Award is completed, and be provided a period of 30 days thereafter in which to decide whether it desires to negotiate with the Fellow or the sponsoring institution, as the case may be, for rights relative to research. Should Sanofi-Aventis so decide, then the Fellow and/or the sponsoring institution shall negotiate in good faith for Sanofi-Aventis to acquire such rights. If, after a period of 120 days, the parties have not entered into an agreement for such research, then the Fellow and/or institution are free to sue or dispose of the research as they so determine.
By submitting this application, the Fellow represents that she or he is not currently debarred, suspended or otherwise excluded by Government Agencies from receiving Federal Contracts. Debarment, suspension or proposed debarment by the Federal Government will constitute grounds for automatic termination of this Fellowship Award. By signing the application, the applicant and the sponsoring institute acknowledge adherence to the conditions and requirements contained with this document.
The Fellow is required to submit an interim report to the Chair of the Fellowship Committee at the end of the first year of the Fellowship Award (by no later than July 1, 2008 ) on the work undertaken and to inform of the research planned for the second year. The Fellow will submit an abstract of the research results to the XXII nd Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis by the abstract submission deadline for this Congress. At the end of the Fellowship Award ( June 31, 2009 ), the research Fellow is required to submit a report to the ISTH of the research results. Sanofi-Aventis, the ISTH and the sponsoring institution recognize the importance of communicating medical or scientific data and, therefore, encourage the publication of the study results in reputable scientific journals and at seminars of conferences. The results of a Fellow’s research project may be published in the usual way at the discretion of the supervisor or department head. Both Sanofi-Aventis and ISTH expect that the Fellowship Award will be acknowledged in any publication dealing with the work carried out during the tenure of the Fellowship Award. One reprint of each publication should be sent to Sanofi-Aventis and another reprint of each publication to the ISTH.
