If you have a traditional email account with the SOM that was created on or before April 1998, you can create a world wide web directory using the methods described here. If you have a newer LDAP account, please contact request@med.unc.edu.
The wwwpub subdirectory is an area reserved for your documents that you wish to publish on the Web. These documents must be written in or converted to html. Before creating your directory, please read our policy on web pages.
You
must have a current account with the OIS. If you do not have one, you may fill
out an online application form or stop by our office
at 76 MacNider Hall.
Your directory's name will be constructed from your user name. For instance, if your user name is johndoe, then the URL is http://www.med.unc.edu/~johndoe/. Unless you create a document called welcome.htm, all files in your directory will be listed and anyone who can get to your directory will be able to access any of your files there. This feature is convenient for those who wish to make files such as PowerPoint available.
If you do not want people to see all of your documents, create a page called welcome.htm. This file will be the first of your web pages, so if people do not specify which of your pages they want to see, they will automatically get welcome.htm. You can link to your other pages from welcome.htm. This feature is convenient for those who want to control what documents people see, and in what order.
FTP (or otherwise move) your files and html documents to your directory (/wwwpub/your_directory).
How to configure your ftp to move files to the web server:
Once you press the connect button you will be connected to your webpage space. Make sure you put your files into the wwwpub directory. Learn how to use FTP here.
