The importance of the musculoskeletal system to the medical practitioner is evident in the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders. These conditions rank second in frequency of reasons for visiting a physician, second in the nation’s overall medical expenses, and fifth as a cause of hospitalization. Musculoskeletal disabilities cause more limitation than disorders in other organ systems across all age groups.
The course begins with the normal development of the musculoskeletal system and how this development may go awry to produce congenital malformations. After next reviewing the gross anatomy of the limbs and back, each of the tissues of the musculoskeletal system—bone, muscle, cartilage, and synovium—is considered individually with respect to microscopic structure, physiology and biochemistry, and pathology. The final section is devoted to trauma, proceeding from the systemic and local response of the organism to the principles of diagnosis and management.

12. Systemic and local responses to musculoskeletal trauma
Small-group sessions will focus on clinical problem-solving and application of principles to particular musculoskeletal disorders. Physical examination of the musculoskeletal system is also emphasized in these sessions. There will be four days during the course in which microscopic material will be studied through the use of streaming video and virtual microscopy.
1. To increase the learner’s knowledge of the development, structure, and function of the musculoskeletal system and of the physiology and biochemistry of bone, cartilage, synovium, and muscle.
2. To acquaint the learner with the pathological conditions altering normal structure, function, biochemistry, and physiology of the musculoskeletal system.
3. To enable the learner to acquire the information and skills necessary to evaluate a patient with injury or disease of the musculoskeletal system
4. To enable the learner to apply his knowledge and skills to the diagnosis and management of patients with musculoskeletal pathology.
