Tim Waer, (MS2)
How do you manage to stay balanced and healthy in spite of the busy med school schedule?
For me, staying balanced and healthy is all about time management. Med School is like getting hit by a fire hose worth of facts, commitments and deadlines. In order to sort those all out and still stay sane, you need to plan into your day some “me time”. Try to set an hour aside for a home-cooked meal and another hour to work out/do a leisure activity, if you can do that and be efficient with the rest of your time, staying balanced and healthy becomes much easier.
Why do you want to become an advocate and what three qualities will you bring to the job?
Med School is a daunting new frontier for all incoming MS1s. I want to be an advocate because I want to be able to help make the transition into med school as smooth as possible. I believe I will bring a fun-loving, positive and vivacious attitude to the advocate position.
What’s the most important piece of advice you would give to an MS1 at the beginning of the year?
Have a life outside of school and pursue something you are passionate about. Whether that is training for a marathon, helping with a charity organization, working on research or joining multiple intramural teams, if you take time out of your day to completely get away from school and do something you enjoy, the stress of med school will dramatically decline.
What is your favorite artery, organ, or nerve; and why?
Obturator Nerve (I think we all know why….He was a Smoooooth Obturator!)
Tell us your favorite joke (PG-13 max, please).
A duck walks into a bar and asks the bartender for some grapes. The bartender, a little bemused at the duck's request tells the duck he doesn't have any. The duck leaves. The next day the duck returns, walks up to the bartender and says "Do you have any grapes?" The bartender, yet again, tells the duck that he doesn't have any. The duck leaves. On the third day the duck comes back into the bar, walks up to the bartender and asks "Do you have any grapes?" The bartender is sick of the duck at this stage and responds "I don't have any grapes. If you ask me for grapes one more time I'm going to nail your bill to the bar!" The duck leaves. The very next day the duck comes back to the bar and walks straight up to the bartender. He asks:"Do you have any nails?" The bartender replies; "no.""Got any grapes?"
