The Laptop Requirement
The School of Medicine requires that all first year medical students purchase a specially configured laptop computer from UNC Student Stores upon entering medical school. You will use this laptop extensively throughout your medical school career – from viewing course materials to taking high-stakes exams. UNC has worked closely with Lenovo and various vendors to provide you with a robust laptop that will meet all of your educational computing needs.
You aren't just purchasing a laptop… you are purchasing a comprehensive computing package including the following:
- A 4-year comprehensive protection plan (for more information, see "What does the 4-year comprehensive protection plan cover?")
- A full 4-year warranty
- Batteries are under a 1-year warranty
- Computer support (including a pool of loaner laptops, if needed)
- Pre-tested and approved compatibility with the UNC School of Medicine computing environment
- An extensive software package including:
- Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Premiere Elements, and Microsoft Office 2010 Enterprise (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, OneNote, and Access)
- Built-in wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi) allow you to connect to the Internet almost anywhere on campus, inside or outside
- Enhanced security via laptop encryption software
