Learning Objectives: (what student will be able to do as a result of this experience)
1. Expose medical students to a career in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
2. Gain a better understanding of how to maximize the function and quality of life in patients with acute and chronic disability by using therapeutic and medical interventions.
3. Improve musculoskeletal and neurological exam techniques.
4. Demonstrate ability to show proficiency in performing a history and physical examination and presenting the exam finding.
5. Demonstrate understanding of functioning and interaction of interdisciplinary rehabilitation to maximize patients’ condition.
6. Demonstrate ability to interact with persons with physical disability.
Learning Activities: (What the student will do e.g., conferences, rounds, clinic, expected hours, on-call requirements/opportunities)
Expected work hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
On-Call Requirements: None
Expectations:
- Students will participate in daily rounds with the resident and attending physician.
- Students will observe patients participating in therapy sessions.
- Students will observe team conferences and family care conferences
- Students will assist the resident with the history and physical exams on patients being admitted to acute inpatient rehabilitation and will present to the attending physician.
- Students will learn and perform a checklist of musculoskeletal physical exam techniques which will be signed off by the supervising resident.
- Students will attend the resident lecture series and will present a research article or rehabilitation topic review once during the rotation.
- Students will participate in educational discussions led by the residents and attending physicians.
- Students will attend clinic for exposure to outpatient rehabilitation care.
Evaluation: (How student will be evaluated e.g., observed administering procedures, interviewing patients, presentation at case conference, participation in rounds, patient write-ups)
All 2 week career exploration electives are pass fail. Please note what is required for passing.
Evaluations of medical students will be provided by the resident and attending physician working with the student. In order to obtain a passing grade students are required to show proficiency in performing a history and physical as observed by the resident as well as participate in daily rounds. The student must be able to collect all pertinent history information and perform necessary physical exam techniques with minimal assistance or cueing provided by the supervising resident. They must also be able to present history and exam findings to the attending physician in an organized fashion. The students will also complete a checklist of required musculoskeletal physical exam techniques which will be taught and supervised by the resident. The students will present a journal article or appropriate rehabilitation topic review to the residents and clerkship director in order to obtain a passing grade.
