Eligibility Requirements for Osteopathic/ Canadian (LCME Accredited) Students
Eligibility Requirements for a Visiting Elective
UNC students always have first priority on all available electives. All applicants must be attending an LCME-accredited medical school and be in their final year of medical school. All applicants must present a letter from the Associate Dean or designate verifying successful completion of Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination.
To be eligible to take an elective, students are required to provide us with the following:
- completed and signed application;
- completed and signed consent form;
- completed and signed physician-certified health form showing compliance with all health requirements;
- completed and signed confidentiality statement;
- completed and signed verification form; and
- check or money order in the amount of $50.00. To pay the non-refundable application fee, checks should be made payable to "The University of North Carolina".
For a listing of available electives please click on the following link http://www.med.unc.edu/ome/stuaff/electives_book/index.html
Please note that visiting students are not eligible to take selective courses.
Our elective periods are four weeks in duration. Occasionally we are able to accept visiting students for two electives (up to eight weeks), on a space-available basis (*see below). It is not always possible to accommodate students from other institutions; however, every effort will be made to comply with your request.
Students applying for an elective during the second summer session or fall semester, will receive information regarding your application after June 12, 2009. Information about spring semester 2009 will be available after October 30, 2009.
Please mail the completed forms and payment for the non-refundable application fee to the address below. All forms must be received at least two months prior to the starting date of the elective you wish to take at this institution.
*Students applying for two electives must complete an “Application For Elective” form for each elective, attach the two forms, and note in the "comment" section at the bottom of the form that you are applying for two electives. If this is done, students will need only one consent form, one health form, one confidentiality statement and one application fee.
| If you are applying for elective(s) at UNC Hospitals, we are required to submit a Systems Access Request Form. This form will enable you to access patient information while on rotation. |
