How can I get an application?
Applications are taken through the American Medical College Application Service. If you are interested in applying to UNC School of Medicine you must submit your application to AMCAS by October 15. Applicants who are considered competitive after review of the AMCAS application will be sent a supplemental application.
Do you consider students who are not North Carolina Residents?
Yes, we consider all applicants who are citizens of the United States or permanent residents.
I am not a citizen of the United States, would I be considered for admission?
No, we do not accept applications from individuals who are not either citizens of the United States or permanent residents of the United States.
What are your prerequisites for admission?
The MD/PhD program has the same prerequisites as the Medical School. They are described at the Medical School admissions website.
I have already begun a PhD program; may I apply to the MD-PhD at UNC?
We will consider students who are in their first year of PhD training.
I have already begun a MD program; may I apply to the MD-PhD program at UNC?
We will consider MD students enrolled in the University of North Carolina program for admission. Please contact Alison Regan for more information.
Do I need to submit MCAT or GRE scores?
We only require MCAT scores for admission. If you have taken the GRE, you may provide those scores on the supplemental application.
When and how will I hear from UNC?
Our staff corresponds primarily through email. If it has been over 6 weeks since your application was verified by AMCAS and you have not heard from us - please call the office at 919-843-6507 or send an email to email@example.com.
What are the mean MCAT and GPA for accepted students?
Our mean MCAT is 35 and mean GPA is 3.75.
Do I have to select a PhD department when I begin the program?
It is not necessary for applicants to designate a specific program within the Graduate School at the time the application is made to the M.D.- Ph.D. Program. Students who are interested in departments which participate in the Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program do not need to select their departments until the beginning of the 1st semester of graduate school in their third year. Individuals who are interested in departments that do not participate in the BBSP must make their department selection by the end of the 1st semester of their second year. What is the financial package for MD-PhD students at the University of North Carolina?
Individuals accepted into our program receive a yearly stipend of $24,000, tuition, tuition related fees and health insurance. Students are responsible for all other charges including yearly disability insurance, one time computer purchase, books, laboratory fees and parking.
What if I am interested in applying to the MD-PhD program and the PhD program at UNC?
The MD/PhD application process and the PhD process are completely separate. If you wish to apply to the MD/PhD program and a PhD program, you must apply to each one. Information on applying to PhD program can by found on the UNC Graduate School website
I am also interested in applying to the medical school at UNC. May I do that?
No. You can only apply to one program or the other. However, if you are a North Carolina resident who is not selected for MD/PhD, you may be considered by the Medical School on a case-by-case basis. This only applies to in-state applicants who are not chosen to advance in the MD/PhD interview process and who are notified of this decision before November 1st.
