Gift Planning
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchhill |
Gift planning enables you to make charitable contributions that benefit the University while minimizing your after-tax cost. By combining an outright gift with a deferred gift, you may be able to make an even more substantial investment in Carolina's mission of teaching, research, patient care, and public service.
Gifts That Provide Income
You may want to make a substantial gift to The Medical Foundation, but feel you cannot afford to give up the annual income the asset produces. We offer several ways to help you make a gift while retaining income for life:
Benefits
In addition to the satisfaction you'll feel for providing for the future of UNC Medicine, there are financial and tax benefits: income for life or a period of years paid to you and/or another beneficiary; an immediate income tax charitable deduction for the portion of the amount that represents a gift to the Medical Foundation; reduction of capital gain tax if funded with appreciated assets; and potential estate tax savings.
Other Deferred Opportunities
Designation
Through the Medical Foundation, you may designate your gift for a particular purpose, department or unit, or the gift can be unrestricted for use where the needs and opportunities are greatest.
Recognizing Your Gift
As the highly influential leader of the UNC Medical School from 1941-1964, W. Reece Berryhill, M.D.'25 left an enduring legacy to UNC, North Carolina and the Nation. As a tribute to the man known as "the father of modern medicine at Carolina," The W. Reece Berryhill Society was established to recognize those generous individuals who, through a planned gift, leave a lasting legacy that will touch the lives of students, patients and the world for generations to come. In addition to membership in the Berryhill Society, the University is pleased to recognize you as a member of the Charles Gerrard Society which recognizes individuals who have made a planned gift to benefit any area of the University.
