Requirements To participate in this study, patients must meet the following criteria:
  • Adult man or woman
  • Patient reports < 3 spontaneous bowel movements (SBMs) per week and meets one or more of the following symptoms for 12 weeks in the preceding 12 months (adapted from Rome II criteria for functional constipation):
    1. Straining during > 25% of bowel movements (BMs)
    2. Lumpy or hard stools during > 25% of BMs
    3. Sensation of incomplete evacuation during > 25% of BMs
    4. Patient must have successfully completed a negative colonoscopy within 5 years of the signature of the Informed Consent Form. However, if the patient is under 50 years of age, completion of a negative flexible sigmoidoscopy within 5 years is acceptable, provided there has been no history of rectal bleeding, weight loss, or anemia.
