Mindfulness for Women with IBS

Principal Investigator Susan A. Gaylord, PhD
Co-Investigators William E. Whitehead, PhD
Organization UNC Program on Integrative Medicine
Description This study compares the effects of two group treatments for IBS. The first group, a support group, will center on sharing information about successful strategies for coping with and reducing symptoms of IBS. The second, the mindfulness group, combines gentle yoga with a meditation technique. Both programs have shown promise for helping people with long-standing illnesses.

Participation will include attending group meetings two hours per week for 8 weeks, with a longer session on a Saturday after the 6th group meeting. We will also ask you to fill out questionnaires before the first meeting, 2 weeks after the program, and 3 months after the program.

A total of 20 subjects with IBS will be invited to participate in this study.
