Application Procedure
The application process is modeled on the one used by NIH because:
  1. It is an established and efficient system that sets a standard for grant applications.
  2. It is one that is familiar to the Seed Grant Selection Committee who will be reviewing the applications.
  3. It provides a template for NIH grant applications and thereby helps achieve the goal of training new investigators to become NIH-funded investigators.
Applicants are asked to submit grant applications using the PHS 398 form and to follow the instructions for preparing an RO1 application, with the following modifications:
  1. Instead of using the face page of the PHS 398 form, please use this face page for your application.
  2. Grants may be in any amount up to $37,500 per year. Grants will be made for a single year, but may be renewed once for a total funding period of two years.
  3. Limit sections A-D of the application to no more than 12 pages total.
  4. In Section A of the application, describe plans for submitting an NIH grant application based on the findings of the seed grant.
  5. In Section D, identify a senior investigator who will serve as a research mentor. Briefly describe the qualifications of the mentor in your area of research, and provide a letter of support by the mentor in which he/she agrees to provide advice on the conduct of the research and agrees to submit semiannual progress reports.
  6. The proposed budget should include fringe benefits for any personnel to be covered through the grant.
  7. Applications should be submitted in electronic version and emailed to knyrop@med.unc.edu. In addition, a printed copy should be mailed to Kirsten Nyrop (see address at the bottom of this page).
