Precepting Schedules

If for any reason a physician is unavailable to precept during time(s) assigned to him/her, s/he is responsible for finding a substitute to fill the assigned precepting slot.  A listserv has been created for this purpose.  The e-mail addresses for all physicians precepting in the General Medicine clinics (Same Day Clinic and Residents' Clinic) are included. When the listserv is used, one message will be sent to all physicians.  The listserv is precept2@listserv.med.unc.edu and can be accessed by clicking on the e-mail address highlighted in blue.  Once substitute arrangements have been made, this information must be given to Jo Williams at jo_williams@med.unc.edu who will update the schedule on this web pages.

Subs and Trades

The substitute preceptor list is important. Subs must remain available to fill in for sick preceptors in either Same Day Clinic or in Residents' Clinic. When scheduled as a sub, we need to be careful about scheduling other activities and must be ready to drop everything if we need to fill in at the last minute. If we must be away, we need to find someone who is willing to sub for us. If you find yourself scheduled for days you cannot cover, please make alternative arrangements on your own and notify Jo of changes. From the listing below you can find out roughly who might be available for trades on any given half day.

In arranging precepting trades, the substitute preceptor should be used only as a last resort. The person needing the trade should check first with the 3-5 doctors who might be available on the half day in question. Though it might be easier to start with a listserv e-mail, we all know that the personal touch works much better. The sub preceptor should not feel compelled to make a trade to accommodate vacation plans, but might try to cover for unanticipated professional activities.
