North Carolina Area Health Professions Recruitment Seminar

June 26-27, 2009

The William & Ida Friday Center
Chapel Hill, NC

The 2009 NC Area Health Professions Recruitment Seminar will be sponsored by Duke University School of Medicine and theUniversity of North Carolina Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The local hosts will also include the NC AHEC Programs and the NC Health Careers Access Program. Students and advisors will be invited from various institutions. Based on past seminars, the audience will represent 15-20 states and 30-40 colleges and universities.

As in the past, the purpose of the seminar is to enable a group of summer program participants to expand their horizons on the professional school opportunities available to them, to enrich their understanding of the preprofessional planning process, and to meet personally with important professional school representatives. Approximately 250 minority and/or disadvantaged students -- mostly college juniors, seniors, and post-graduates -- will attend.

The Friday afternoon agenda will include an introduction of each professional school representative, as well as the summer program participants. Each representative will be allowed to give a very brief statement about his/her institution. If you will send a one-page overview of your school's program prior to the seminar, we will include it in the students' packets.

We will have two sets of concurrent workshops on Friday afternoon. Each will consist of 5-6 panelists. Panel discussions will address such topics as:

  1. The admissions process
  2. Preprofessional planning
  3. Alternative health career pathways and options
  4. Financial aid
  5. Support systems
  6. Life in professional/graduate school

For those unfamiliar with our past conference, we invite our visitors to participate actively as members of the panels. The response form includes a space to indicate an area of interest if you are willing to serve as a resource person. We will make every effort to assign you to a panel if you so desire.

Saturday morning will begin with a mock interview. We will need volunteers to serve on the mock admissions committee. Roles will be assigned prior to the session. You may also indicate your willingness to serve on this panel by checking the appropriate topic on the response form. Roles will be assigned prior to the session.

We have also designated approximately two hours on Saturday morning for a Recruitment Fair. During this time, students will be allowed to consult with the school representative(s) of their choice. The formal program will end at 10:15 AM and the recruitment fair will begin soon after.

Please make your reservations as soon as possible, no later then April 30, 2009.

We certainly hope that you or your representative will be able to attend. Please let us know your tentative plans by returning the response questionnaire no later than April 30, 2009.
