MEDworld Volunteer Sign-Up

Volunteer opportunities include the following: collection of donated supplies at UNC Hospitals, sorting donated medical equipment and supplies, inventory, and packing supplies for shipments in the warehouse, as well as helping in the areas of administration and fundraising.

Volunteers are given a 2-hour training session in MEDworld collection and warehouse operations. To ensure hospital safety procedures are followed, volunteers complete a 2-hour Universal Precautions Training session through the UNC Hospitals Volunteer Services. Both training sessions are required for volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer, contact Ella Akin: jakin@nc.rr.com

For more information on the UNC Hospitals training requirements and an application for volunteering at UNC Hospitals, go to the following site:

We ask that volunteers commit to working with MEDworld for a minimum of one year. Volunteers are offered opportunities to shadow hospital physicians in clinical care.

Supplies

Supplies commonly donated are gloves, gauze, wound supplies, syringes, Foleys, sutures, and hygienic supplies. Please refer to our flier for a list of appropriate supplies.

How To Drop Off Supplies

MEDworld has the following drop-off sites on the UNC medical campus for convenient drop-off of appropriate supplies.

Download and print our PDF flier with important supply requirements.

LABOR AND DELIVERY

Location: On the 4th floor of the Women’s Hospital. This bin is located in the storage room just in front of the secretary’s desk. Go to the 4th floor of the women’s hospital, then pick up the phone and ask the secretary to let you into the labor and delivery room area. Walk around the nurses station and the storage room is just to your left.

MAIN HOSPITAL OPERATING ROOMS and OPERATING ROOM ANNEX

Location: On the 2nd floor in the main hospital. In between patient waiting areas suite B and suite A there is a door labeled "Surgical Services," (Surgical Services is right in front of Vascular Interventional Radiology). Go through the Surgical Services door, the bin is on the left of the hallway.

Location: After exiting 2nd floor main elevators pass through both sets of double doors on opposite side of hallway (from elevators). The bin is located at end of hallway on the right.

PEDIATRICS INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Location: 2nd floor of the Women’s hospital. Go the 2nd floor of the main hospital and cross over into the women’s hospital. Follow the signs to the “Pediatrics intensive care unit”. Our bin is in the soiled utility room next to the bathroom.

CENTRAL STERILE PROCESSING

Location: Ground floor of main hospital, down the main hallway past the central distribution entrance on the right.

FOURTH FLOOR OPERATING ROOMS

Location: Go to the fourth floor of memorial hospital, take the silver or blue elevators so that you end up near the Anderson wing, where the 4700 patient rooms are. When you come out of the elevators, look for the Trauma department sign, right in front are double wooden doors that lead to the operating rooms. Go to the pre-operative area, walk straight past the patient beds and our bin is around the corner on the wall.

FOURTH FLOOR OLD CLINIC BUILDING

This collection bin has been eliminated because of the large amount of unusable and research related laboratory supplies placed in the bin.

NOTE: ALL BINS MUST BE RETURNED TO THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION.
