MEDWorld Operations

Nurses and other staff throughout the hospital identify reusable disposed material and place it in MEDWorld collection bins, which are found in various areas around the hospital. Re-usable items are those which have been opened but not used or have been contaminated by reasons other than patient contact. Our hospital volunteers are trained to identify what can be recovered and what should be discarded and all personnel handling the materials are trained in Universal Precautions (University of North Carolina Hospitals' Guidelines for Disposal of Regulated Material). The collected material is then brought to Central Distribution in MEDWorld transport bins, which are then taken to the MEDWorld warehouse where materials are sorted, inventoried and packaged in boxes. Each box is labeled with the MEDWorld disclaimer and the address of the receiving charity. The boxes are then donated to recipient charities. All shipping and transportation and costs are the responsibility of the recipient charity as MEDWorld funds do not support such costs.

To receive a donation, the receiving charity / individual must fulfill the following criteria:

  • The recipient must be an individual or organization with a focus on global health through local or foreign medical missions, clinics or hospitals
  • The recipient must ensure that the donated material is used for care of appropriate populations and not used for sale
  • The recipient must ensure adequate sterilization of supplies if this is necessary for their use
  • The recipient must provide a formal letter requesting donations and the letter must specify the type and amount of supplies requested, contact information, transportation and shipment plans, procedures for passing through local customs, assurance that the supplies will be used only for charity care and not sold or used for care requiring payment
  • The recipient must provide feedback via photographs or comments on the use of the supplies
  • The recipient must provide an approximate date for pick up of supplies and all requests for supplies must be made at least 4 weeks in advance of the pick up date
  • The recipient must pick up and transport supplies from the MEDWorld warehouse (not UNC Hospital)
