Procedures

The following procedures are available through the Core:

Preclincal Disease Models

Renal Artery Stenosis Surgical narrowing of the renal artery-relevant model of systemic hypertension
Aortic Banding Surgical narrowing of the aortic arch to induce left ventricular pressure-volume overload
Reversible Aortic Banding Surgical narrowing of the aorta with later removal of the band as a model of hypertrophy regression
Hind Limb Ischemia Ligation of arteries in the hind limb to induce angiogenesis
Femoral Artery Injury Removal of endothelium to study arterial neointimal formation after rheostasis
Carotid Artery Injury Removal of endothelium to study arterial neointimal formation after rheostasis
Arterial and Venous Catheterization Insertion of a ported catheter into an artery or vein to facilitate injection
Invasive Blood Pressure Measurement
Direct measurement of intra-arterial pressures via inserted Scisense catheter
Thrombosis Model Using ferric chloride applied to the carotid to study platelet function and thrombus formation
Indwelling Catheter Placement Permanent placement of a ported catheter to allow for repeated intravenous or intra-arterial injections
Craniotomy (Pia Vessel Exposure) Used as a model for vascular integrity or leakage
LAD Ligation Ligation of the left anterior descending artery of the heart as a model of myocardial infarction
LAD Ischemia/Reperfusion Ligation of the left anterior descending artery of the heart with reperfusion post ischemia
Pulmonary Artery Banding Restricting pulmonary artery blood flow as a model for pulmonary hypertension
Ventricular Pressure-Volume Measurement Direct measurement of cardiac left ventricle blood pressure and stroke volume (Scisense)
Telemetry Device Implantation For acquisition of physiologic data from conscious, unrestrained animals over time
Renal Transplant For immunobiological studies
Aortic Arch Transplant Model for studies on morphology, imaging and mechanisms of arteriosclerosis
Banding or Ligation of Inferior Vena Cava Experimental model of venous thrombosis
Splenectomy Surgical removal of the spleen
Nephrectomy Surgical removal of the kidney
Orchiectomy Surgical removal of the testes, useful for studies involving hormonal influences on the cardiovascular system or tumors
Ovariectomy Surgical removal of the ovaries, useful for studies involving hormonal influences on the cardiovascular system or tumors
Adrenalectomy Surgical removal of the adrenal glands
Carotid Artery Ligation Complete ligation of one of the carotid arteries
Cremaster Muscle Prep Surgical incision and flattening of the thin cremaster muscle, useful for in situ blood flow studies (intravital microscopy)
Aortic Dissection Post-mortem, microsurgical removal of the aorta from base of the heart to the abdominal bifurcation

Cardiovascular Phenotyping

Ultrasound

Ultrasound assessment of organs, tumors or vasculature

3-D Ultrasound 3-D, volumetric assessment of tumors or organs
Ultrasound-guided Injection Use of ultrasound to assure precise delivery of a substance to its intended target
Prenatal Ultrasound Ultrasound imaging of fetuses
Prenatal Ultrasound with Fetal Harvest Terminal procedure to assure matching of fetus with its ultrasound image
Whole Body Perfusion/Fixation In situ perfusion of organs to be used for microscopy or tissue/cell culture
Tail-cuff Blood Pressure Measurements Non-invasive measurement of blood pressure
Aortic Compliance Non-invasive assessment of aortic elasticity using Doppler
Echocardiography Functional assessment of the heart using ultrasound
Pulse-wave Doppler Non-invasive assessment of blood flow through the arteries
Laser Doppler Non-invasive assessment of blood flow using laser scanning technology. Useful for documenting change in blood flow patterns over time
Oxygen Saturation Measurement Method of assessing cardiopulmonary function during surgical or non-surgical procedures
Minipump Implantation For continuous infusion of investigational drugs
