Research

Peter H Gilligan PhD is Professor of Microbiology-Immunology and Pathology-Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.and the Director of the Clinical Microbiology-Immunology Laboratories at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He is a member of the Center for Infectious Diseases at UNC where he collaborates with investigators on various research projects at the UNC Center, Lilongwe, Malawi. His primary research interest is the detection and molecular epidemiology of emerging infectious diseases. For the past 20 years, he has led the CPEP-approved post-doctoral training program in Medical and Public Health Microbiology. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and the Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. In 2001, he received from the Academy, the Sonnenwirth-bioMerieux Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology. He currently serves as an editor for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and as a member of the ICAAC program committee. He recently co-authored the Cumitech on cystic fibrosis microbiology as well as publishing over 125 articles, books, and book chapters. He has given over 275 invited lectures regionally, nationally and internationally.
