Gretja Schnell is the 2009 Manire Award Recipient

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is pleased to announce that Gretja Schnell is the 2009 Manire Award recipient. Gretja is a fifth year student in Ron Swanstrom’s lab.  The selection committee believed her past and continuing investigation of CNS compartmentalization of HIV sets a high standard of accomplishment. Furthermore, her research papers show a clear maturing of her research design capabilities, technical expertise, and interpretation of results.

Dr. Manire was an active member of the UNC Faculty from 1950 until his retirement in 1989. During his illustrious career at UNC-CH, he served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences (1965-66), Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (1966-79), and Vice Chancellor and Dean of the GraduateSchool (1979-86). This award is given in his honor, recognizing his dedication to the University of North Carolina and to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, as well as his love of graduate education and research.
