T regulatory cells (Tregs) are vital in the control and regulation of myriad immune functions. They have also been shown to be an important factor that can decide the balance between the development or control of an autoimmune disease. In a study published this month in the journal Immunity, Dr. Yisong Wan and colleagues have just identified the transcription factor GATA 3 (known to be important in other T cell development) as an upstream factor that regulates FoxP3, the primary transcription factor for Tregs. FoxP3 is required for inducing the Treg phenotype. To read more about this interesting research, click here.
