My research involves the intersection of epidemiology and molecular biology. We are particularly interested in malaria, Pneumocystis jirovecii, and mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Work in the lab is done in conjunction with epidemiological studies in Malawi, DR Congo, Thailand and Cambodia. Using specimens from human drug trials, we are studying the evolution of drug resistance and developing new tools to detect resistance in malaria and pneumocystis. We are also using blood and tissue samples from malaria and HIV infected pregnant women to understand the pathogenesis of malaria and HIV during pregnancy and the mechanisms of mother-to-child transmission.

Our lab is also working on the mechanisms of action of antimalarial drugs.
