Postdoctoral position in computational proteomics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

A postdoctoral position is available in the Giddings lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focused on development and implementation of a high throughput computational pipeline for proteomic based genome annotation. The University of North Carolina is a top-notch public university, within a great environment. Our lab combines a strong computational group with an experimental group, focused on various genomic, proteomic, and systems biology projects. We are looking for a candidate to work on computational pipeline development for high-throughput annotation of the human genome using large mass spectrometry data sets, using tools such as our HMMScore (Khatun et al, Bioinformatics, 2008). The goal of the work is to uncover the biology of transcription and translation at unprecedented detail, with special focus on examining alternative splicing in various disease states.
Qualifications:
The candidate should have a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Sciences, Physics, and or other computationally focused field. Those having both biology/genome background and computational skills will be particularly suitable, though we are open to training the right candidate with a non-biological background. Skills required include: at least 2 years experience programming in an object-oriented language (e.g. Java, ObjC, Smalltalk, C++) and solid statistics skills. In addition, experience with interpreted/scripting languages like PERL or Python a big plus, as well as SQL database experience. Candidates with little or no programming experience will not be considered for the position. Qualified candidates should send their curriculum vitae, a brief research interest and the name, phone number, and email address for three referees to:
