General Surgery Residents

Gift Mulima

I am pursuing surgery because there is a high disease burden that requires surgical intervention and few surgeons on the ground. The majority of surgeons in Malawi are foreign and do not stay in Malawi for long periods of time. I believe it would make a tremendous difference if our country would have Malawian surgeons willing to stay and work in the country"

Chifundo Kajombo

Why did you choose surgery?

There is a big shortage of doctors in Malawi let alone surgeons, as such the work is overwhelming on the existing surgeons, I love surgery as it is so challenging and delicate."

Why did you choose KCH for training?

Because I would like to work in Malawi as such this training at KCH brings me close to the people/patients I would serve"

What are your future plans?

I would love to subspecialize and do paediatric surgery. In Malawi, we have a lot of paediatric surgical cases that are being managed by general surgeons because of lack of paediatric surgeons so I would love to do this in order to help improve the standard of care to this population"
