Purpose of the course:
The purpose of this course in Diseases of the Nervous System is to acquaint you with the experimental and clinical basis for our current concepts of nervous system disease. The course runs for the fall semester as a single course. This course serves as a survey of nervous system diseases.
All sessions will take place in the third floor conference room of the Neuroscience Building (Room 3118 across from the elevators) from 4:30 PM to 6:30PM. Classes are held once a week, and occur on either Monday or Thursday - please see the course schedule for details.
Course Director: Dr. John Gilmore.
Assistant Course Director:
Dr. Paul Manis
Course Administrative Assistant: Lori Blalock, Neuroscience Bldg 3122, 6-1260. lori_blalock@med.unc.edu
Grades in the class will be determined based 80% on a paper on a specific disease area. The paper should be a critical review of the current literature and deal with both basic and clinical issues about the disease. The paper should run 8-10 pages, double spaced, in a 12 point font, with references.
Course evaluations--important!
A Block evaluation sheet will be handed out. Please turn in the evaluation sheet with the exam. To preserve anonymity, you can simply put it into the evaluation box at Lori Blalock's desk. We ask you please not to do this but to take the evaluation process very seriously. First of all, we faculty take your comments seriously, incorporating your constructive suggestions into our future iterations of the course or even making changes within the current course year if warranted. Secondly, faculty need feedback on how they are perceived. This is particularly true for younger faculty who may not yet have a lot of experience and are trying to figure out how to be effective. These evaluations go into a faculty member's teaching portfolio so if you have complaints, please be diplomatic! And if you have praise, it helps your favorite faculty member if you spell out what you enjoyed about their teaching.
