Christopher Mazzone

Biography
In 2009 I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BS in Psychology and a minor in neuroscience. Following graduation, I worked as a technician in the lab of Richard Mains and Betty Eipper at the University of Connecticut Health Center studying a possible interaction between estrogen and the protein Kalirin-7 in female mice. I entered UNC's BBSP in the Fall of 2011 and joined Tom Kash's lab after finishing my first year.
Research
I am currently interested in studying the neurocircuitry of anxiety and addiction, specifically within the extended amygdala and striatum. These particular areas play a role in regulating emotional and locomotor behaviors and can be profoundly impacted by anxiety and addiction disorders. By using mouse lines that allow for selective activation (or inhibition) of neuronal subpopulations in these regions I hope to isolate populations of neurons that contribute to these disorders, which may ultimately lead to more specific therapeutic targets.
