A Message From The Chair

powers2In the past decade, neurologists have made great advances in the treatment of such devastating neurological disorders as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. Aided by modern techniques of neuro-imaging, genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology and clinical trial methodology, neurology has emerged from its origins as primarily a diagnostic specialty into a new era of therapeutic successes. The Department of Neurology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is in the forefront of this new era as a leader in teaching, providing and discovering new treatments for neurological diseases.

The School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is consistently rated among the top public academic research medical centers in the United States. The Department of Neurology provides the neurological expertise to support the School’s three part mission of teaching, research and patient care. We have more than 30 faculty with broad subspecialty representation in epilepsy, sleep disorders, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, pediatric neurological disorders, behavioral neurology, and dementia. We are dedicated to teaching. We provide educational programs for our medical students, residents and fellows that teach the art of compassionate care with the science of evidence-based treatment. Our research laboratories in the Neuroscience Research Center opened in 2001 and provide state-of-the-art facilities for our faculty to carry out their investigations into the basic mechanisms of neurological physiology and pathophysiology. The faculty have a strong commitment to clinical research. The Department is active in many clinical trials of treatment for neurological disease and serves as the national coordinating center for an NIH-funded multicenter study of stroke prevention using positron emission tomography to select patients for brain bypass surgery. Our commitment to excellence in clinical care is absolute. We are proud to be the hospital operated by and for the people of North Carolina. We provide high quality neurological consultation and specialty neurological care to the people of North Carolina and to others who travel to our state through our busy inpatient service and outpatient clinics in the modern Neuroscience Hospital.
