Neurocritical Care

Neurocritical care is a specialty that provides care for patients with severe neurological injury or illness. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to patient care with a team comprised of neurointensivists with training in critical care, neurology and emergency medicine, neurologists, neurosurgeons, acute care nurse practitioners, critical care pharmacists and critical care nurses. Our expertise allows our team to provide the highest level of care for patients with a wide range of complex and life-threatening neurological conditions.

Our neurocritical care research team is actively involved in a broad array of research aimed to better understand acute neurological disorders, provide improved treatment options for patients with brain injury, and improve upon the delivery and safety of patient care.

UNC Hospitals Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit

The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) at UNC Hospitals provides the highest level of care for patients with acute neurological illness or injury. The 16-bed unit has the most advanced state-of-the-art capabilities available giving our multi-disciplinary team the best opportunity improve patient outcome. The NSICU acts as a tertiary referral center for patients from North Carolina and surrounding states. With over 1,300 admissions per year, the NSICU provides comprehensive critical care to a wide variety of conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Our team takes pride in taking care of the patient as well as their family by allowing 24-hour visiting hours and ensuring an open line of communication exists.
