The Division of Stroke and Vascular Neurology serves the citizens of North
Carolina by providing high-quality comprehensive stroke care, educating patients and health care providers, and conducting cutting-edge research in stroke care and prevention.
UNC Hospitals Stroke Center
The clinical home of the Division is the UNC Hospitals Stroke Center, a multidisciplinary program that incorporates state-of-the-art approaches in caring for patients with stroke or other cerebrovascular disorders.
By demonstrating a strong track record of quality and excellence in stroke care, the UNC Hospitals Stroke Center has maintained Disease-Specific Care Certification in Stroke and the Gold Seal of Approval™ from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) since the Center's foundation in 2002.
The Stroke Center's multidisciplinary care approach utilizes the expertise of Stroke and Neurocritical Care Neurologists and other physicians and staff with specialty training in the treatment of stroke and TIA, including emergency medicine physicians, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, physiatrists (rehabilitation medicine), and stroke ancillary care specialists (physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, and social workers).
Acute stroke care is provided to medically eligible patients by an on-call Acute Stroke Team. The Stroke Team is available 24/7 and coordinates acute treatments, such as intravenous thrombolysis and interventional procedures. The Team also screens patients for inclusion in clinical studies and trials of the latest experimental stroke therapies.
The nucleus of the UNC Stroke Center is comprised of highly-trained Stroke Neurologists - Drs. David Huang, Natalie Aucutt-Walter, and Dedrick Jordan – and a Stroke Nurse Practitioner, Susan Wilson, FNP. Dr. Michael Wang is the current ACGME vascular neurology fellow. The interventional stroke treatment program is spearheaded by Drs. Sten Solander, Anand Germanwala, and Hortensia Alvarez. Stroke treatment and prevention clinical trials/studies are coordinated by Aaron Abate, Anne Beckwith and Sierra Marino.
