Lawrence “Larry” Marks, MD, will assume the role of Interim Chair of the Department of Neurology, effective May 1. During his time in this interim position, he will retain his current titles as Dr. Sidney K. Simon Distinguished Professorship of Oncology Research, and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

William “Bill” Powers, MD, announced earlier this year that he would enter the three year phased retirement program and step down as Chair of the Department of Neurology, effective April 30. Powers will continue as attending neurologist in the Neurology inpatient services and participate in the educational programs of the Department.

“Over the past eleven years, Dr. Powers has been an excellent leader for the Department of Neurology. I would like to thank Dr. Marks for stepping in to lead the Department on an interim basis,” said Wesley Burks, MD, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine.

Marks has served as the Chair of Radiation Oncology since 2008. His clinical and research interests include breast and lung cancer, with a particular focus on improving radiation therapy to reduce the effects of radiation on normal tissue. He is also a national leader in studying the frequency and causes of “human-errors” in the clinic. Through these efforts, he has broadly helped to develop several programs locally at UNC, and nationally, to improve patients’ clinical outcomes.

Prior to joining UNC as chair in 2008, Marks was the Banks Anderson, Sr., MD, professor of radiation oncology at Duke University, where he also directed the residency training program. He earned his MD at the University of Rochester and completed his residency in radiation medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
