This Core interfaces with infrastructure established by the SOM and School of Pharmacy. Four years ago UNC established a Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery (CICBDD) that houses a high throughput screening center and medicinal chemists to empower drug discovery by UNC faculty. However, the CICBDD require a working assay in order to take advantage of the high-throughput screening. The Translational Neuroscience Core is the ideal vehicle to assist neuroscientists in assay development and empower NINDS – neuroscientists to discover treatment for neurological diseases. Notably, UNC neuroscientists have a major success in this area as evidenced by the recent finding published in Nature that an FDA approved drug may be useful for treatment of the autism spectrum disorder, Angelman Syndrome.
