Matsushima Lab Research

Our laboratory is focused on the interplay between cells, chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors that are prominent during demyelination and remyelination of the central nervous system in which the blood-brain barrier remains intact. In particular, microglia/macrophages appear to be critical in both processes; therefore, understanding and regulating their activities may be important in altering pathology and in devising therapies. We are also studying features of myelination during neonatal development using morphological, biochemical, molecular and cellular techniques to compare processes to adult remyelination in the central nervous system.
