I completed my undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University in 2006. I graduated as valedictorian with a Biochemistry BS, Microbiology BS, Psychology BA, and minors in Genetics and Biotechnology. Before graduate school I spent a year as a Medical Assistant at The Family Doctor in Chapel Hill, and a year as a research assistant in the lab of Dr. Nicole Calakos at Duke. I was also a clinical trial research assistant for Dr. Daniel Kaufer at UNC. In 2008 I joined the UNC MD-PhD program. After the first two years of medical school I started my Neurobiology PhD in 2010. I am currently in the labs of Dr. Charlotte Boettiger and Dr. Martin Styner investigating episodic memory circuitry abnormalities in alcoholism using DTI, sMRI, and resting state fMRI analysis.
Alcoholism is a major public health concern in the United States. Further, the ability to successfully treat alcoholism depends on our understanding of the neurobiology of the disease. I am analyzing resting state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fcMRI), structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography to better understand if alcohol induced damage to the episodic memory circuitry is modulated by addiction severity. Understanding these insults will allow us to better structure therapy for patients struggling with alcohol use disorders.
