Neurosurgery Patient Buoyed by UNC Baseball Team
January 26, 2011 -- The "Wilmington Star News" featured a story about 10-year-old Zion Kinlaw, who underwent brain surgery last October. The young man received excellent care from the Neurosurgery team (including surgeons Victor Perry, MD, and Jennifer Orning, MD) as well as a large group of unanticipated supporters in the form of the UNC baseball team.
Cush Authors Book Chapter
January 30, 2011 -- Sharon Cush, RN, penned a chapter on surgical interventions for brain tumors in the recently published "Site-Specific Cancer Series: Central Nervous System Cancers."

July 27, 2010 -- Today, 17-month-old Jessiah Jackson is a miraculous bundle of energy. On July 17, the toddler fell from his family's porch onto a power washer, and a metal L-shaped rod punctured the back of his skull and became lodged two inches into his brain.

June 19, 2010 -- June marked the inaugural presentation of the Elizabeth Bullitt Neurosurgery Resident Career Achievement Award. Named to recognize Dr. Bullitt’s outstanding contributions to Neurosurgery, it was presented to departing chief resident, Dr. Deanna Sasaki-Adams.
Division to Department: Enhancing Neurosurgical Care
April 21, 2010 -- Neurosurgery will no longer be a division under the Department of Surgery. Effective July 1, 2010, UNC will have the new Department of Neurosurgery Chaired by Dr. Matthew Ewend, the current neurosurgery Chief of Division.
Conway Presented Nursing Recognition Award
April 14, 2010 – UNC Healthcare Ambulatory Care annually presents two nursing awards. The recipients not only excel in nursing practice, but also demonstrate special qualities of caring and compassion. The Award, which includes an educational stipend, may be used by the nurses over a three-year period to further enhance their knowledge and abilities in the health care setting.
UNC Spine Center Designated Center of Distinction by BCBSNC
March 25, 2010 -- In an effort to help patients choose the best hospital when facing surgery, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) recognized select North Carolina hospitals for excellence in spinal surgery, knee replacement, and hip replacement.
Neurosurgery Residency Program to Expand and Restructure
January 26, 2010 -- The Neurosurgery Residency Review Committee (RRC) approved the expansion of UNC Neurosurgery Resident Complements to two residents per year. The change is effective starting this year; therefore, Neurosurgery will accept two residents from the 2010 resident applicants. In addition, the division will also shorten its residency program from 7 years to 6 years with a total of 12 residents.
